Frequently Asked Questions
What is ptfe?
Ptfe is a synthetic fluoropolymer of tetrafluoroethylene that has numerous applications. The best known brand name of PTFE-based formulas is Teflon by Chemours. Chemours is a 2015 spin-off of DuPont Co., which discovered the compound in 1938.
PTFE is a fluorocarbon solid, as it is a high-molecular-weight compound consisting wholly of carbon and fluorine. PTFE is hydrophobic: neither water nor water-containing substances wet PTFE, as fluorocarbons demonstrate mitigated London dispersion forces due to the high electronegativity of fluorine. PTFE has one of the lowest coefficients of friction of any solid.
PTFE is used as a non-stick coating for pans and other cookware. It is non-reactive, partly because of the strength of carbon–fluorine bonds, and so it is often used in containers and pipework for reactive and corrosive chemicals. Where used as a lubricant, PTFE reduces friction, wear and energy consumption of machinery. It is commonly used as a graft material in surgical interventions. Also, it is frequently employed as coating on catheters; this interferes with the ability of bacteria and other infectious agents to adhere to catheters and cause hospital-acquired infections.
What is Teflon?
Teflon is a DuPont brand name and registered trademark for a non-stick, stain-resistant material used in cooking, apparel, automotive, household, personal care, and industrial applications. Teflon is not a chemical.
What is your current lead time?
Our current lead time is between 7 to 10 working days, this is subject to volumes and coating specification. However, we understand that shorter lead times are on occasions required, please advise us of your requirements.
Are you ISO approved?
We have a Quality Management System registered to BS EN 9001:2008
Can existing PTFE coatings be removed?
Existing PTFE coatings can be removed by means of alternative blast media, such as crushed corn, crushed walnut shell and crushed thermoset plastics are some of the options. These materials have little or no effect upon the geometry of the part.
How can PTFE stick to another surface?
PTFE can stick to another surface by means of roughening the surface with an abrasive medium, such as Aluminium Oxide or by the application of an etch primer.
What chemicals is PTFE resistant to?
PTFE materials are essentially chemically inert. They are affected only by molten alkali metals, fluorine and chlorine trifluoride at elevated temperatures and pressures.
